gut check

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

The only good thing about today was finally learning someone’s name after almost a year of politely saying hi. That was before practise. I almost threw up during practise. I guess the good news is that there is a time when i would have met a tall, beautiful woman and thrown up, at least i’m waiting an hour now! Ha ha, seriously though, that’s the second time in less than a month—i do it to myself. i had 3 strawberries, a handful of grapes and a handful of blackberries right before practise, but not enough water to help me digest them before practise. I had a strong standing series and then fell apart somewhere on the ground. Ugh, i hate feeling like that. i could feel everything i ate, right in the top of my chest. i wanted to run out of the room, but the next pose started and i couldn’t budge. i’m lucky to have teachers who take care of me. andrew bynum had a rough night tonight. He sprained his right knee in the early part of the first quarter. Oh my gosh, what a drag way to start a game. after missing a shot, kb24 fell into drew’s knee. you can tell from the screen captures, drew was in a lot of pain, but after the game he was in good spirits and is thinking he won’t be out for too long. Cross your fingers, ab17 is a big part of the lakers’ recent domination.

Hey, the super bowl is tomorrow, seriously, it’s been on my mind all week! My prediction for the game? steelers have a tough defense, i won’t be surprised if they rout the cardinals. Still, har har, it would be so cool to see the cards win, warner is such a storybook kid. the only thing i know for sure is that there will be some expensive commercials. i think we’re gonna see more than a few obama-inspired ads—fauxbama advertising, that’s the new trend. Can’t wait to talk about it tomorrow! ~m

silence. awakening. rebirth.

Friday, January 30th, 2009

a few days ago, my friends got kicked out of their illegal sublet. I’m not sure how, but somehow i got volunteered to help take all of one friend’s stuff to the bus station. until this evening, i never realized how difficult it was to push a shopping cart loaded down with all of your stuff. it’s not as easy as some people make it seem. when we got to the bike path, we were able to ride our bikes while pulling the cart between us. that was actually kind of fun! we couldn’t get going to fast, it was still a lot quicker than walking. When we got to the bus station, we had a few minutes to wait and my friend pulled out her tarot cards. i don’t know anything about that kind of stuff, but i’ve never put that much stock into it. while holding the deck, she told me to think about my past and pull a card. then i had to do the same while thinking of where i was and where i will be. past, present and future. so i did that and we flipped over my “past” card and it said “silence.” that was kind of weird because i don’t like talking about the past, i’m more concerned about tomorrow. we flipped over my “present” card and it said “awakening.” well, that’s kind of appropriate because right now everything about my life “is oh so new to me.” then we flipped over my “future” card and it said “rebirth.” whoa. maybe there’s something to those cards after all! see you tomorrow ~m

If you practise bikram yoga after a full day of work, or whatever else may occupy your day-to-day, i gotta tip my hat to you. i am the biggest baby when it comes to the afternoon classes! Oh my gosh, you would think it was my intro week! Maybe i’m exaggerating, but seriously, i got dizzy more than a few times during the 4 today. it’s not unusual for me to get dizzy once or twice, during class, but today was like 4 or 5. if you get dizzy in class, do what i do. i stare straight ahead and try not to move. if i can, i smile. this really works in front of a mirror, making eye contact with yourself helps stop the room from spinning. if that doesn’t work and i’m worried i’m gonna drop, i’ll bend my knees and go straight down and sit on my heels with my knees and feet together, like at the beginning of ardha-kurmasana.

my office mate hooked me up with over 15 hours of african funk—it’s been amazing listening to say the least. i don’t understand any of the words, which is prolly the thing i like most about it. not knowing the words leaves it free to intrepretation, like listening to pure music. the other thing i’m excited about is the super bowl this weekend! everyone has the steelers winning the game since they have such a stout defense. wouldn’t it be cool if the cardinals surprised everyone and won the game? who knows what’s gonna happen, that’s what makes it exciting. at the beginning of the season, i thought the packers and pats were gonna be in a super bowl rematch this weekend. look what happened—brady got his ankle broke in the first game and the packers, well, sucked. but it’s not just the game, there’s also the commercials! just as important as the game, in some people’s minds, and prolly more important than the game to others. It’s funny how the super bowl can mean so much to some and for others it doesn’t even register. I honestly don’t care who wins because the only team i want to see win a super bowl is the packers, but it’s still fun to watch a good game and it is such an important game. 32 teams start the season with hopes of playing in the game this sunday. Most people think football season starts in september, but, really, it’s a year-round sport with official team activities beginning in may. this sunday is the culmination of everything we work towards as a team, as players, as fans. sure i don’t care who wins, but it’s what we’ve been working all year for! are you ready for some football? i am! ~m

p.s. don’t worry, the pack will be back!

changes

This week has been a trip down memory lane thanks to my little trixie kitty. On monday night, it was so cold in the birdhouse, i got under blankets and watched a movie. To my surprise, Trixie snuggled under the covers, sticking her head out from them, just like me and just like a certain bear used to do back when he was an only kitty! that was how bear slept next to me every night before motor moved in. Motor passed away almost 3 years ago. Sometimes it’s hard to remember what it was like when he was around. so much has changed since then. this morning, trixie gave me a little reminder of what it was like when i was the skipper and he was my little buddy! While i was busy with the snooze button, she climbed on my back and started kneading my spine just like motor used to! Oh my gosh, that sent me back to one of my favorite things about the little guy! These changes in trixie are unexpected and a nice reminder of brothers gone but not forgotten.

Some things never change though and i have more proof of what a nerd i am. i asked one of my hot bikram buddies what her plans were for the evening and she still had to make her choice between night clubs. My plan that night? Stay at home with my cat and watch a movie about a font. You gotta admit, she’s a cute cat!

Here are my favorite shots from the movie “Helvetica.” If you want further proof of what a cool place amsterdam must be, check out all those bikes! Oh man, what a sight to see! In downtown santa cruz, they want to build *another* parking structure. in my mind, the problem isn’t that there aren’t enough parking spaces, the real problem is that there are too many cars. If people biked or bussed to work and shopping, there wouldn’t be a problem with parking spaces.

candyman

peta2.com is peta’s new website aimed at children? young adults? at quick glance, they’re marketing tuna as “sea kittens” and also offering dorm room kits, so i’m not sure who the website is aimed at. In any case, in some kind of award situation, they announced paul newman-os vanilla cookie as best vegan cookie. Has anyone had it? i’ve always been a fan of uncle eddie’s vegan cookies myself. Sour Patch won best candy, but prolly only because there was a separate chocolate award (ghiradelli)! ha ha, seriously though, it’s rare when sour patches make it all the way home! i never ate cookies or candy when i was drinking alcohol, but ever since i quit—look out! How’s that for some bikram yoga talk, what’s your favorite snack? I know, i’ll give you my tip for today, are you ready? Here’s unofficial Bikram Yoga tip number one, if you must drink water, take a very small sip and hold it in your mouth for a few seconds before you swallow it, you won’t drink as much water this way. see, i’m good for something every now and then. ~m

I can’t believe there is so much fuss about the switch to digital television. if they delay it by 4 months, like there is talk of now, it’s ridiculous. They don’t want to make the switch because 6 million people aren’t ready for it. I think no television would be good for a lot of people. In an emergency, you need a battery-powered radio, not a tv. I think the real concern is the drop in advertising revenue that could go missing if 6 million viewers are suddenly lost. It all boils down to the almighty dollar. I know this website has the intention of selling, but making money isn’t my true goal, even though i would like to make a living off of this someday. i know that’s a pipe dream right now with the way the economy is, so maybe it’s good that they delay the switch. How will people know what to buy if they don’t have television? good night, m

I swear if you go without tv long enough, you will come up with cool ideas.

my daily bike ride just got a whole lot easier with the opening of a new bridge crossing the san lorenzo river. that’s the view from here…m
