bad bikram habits pt. 1
not everyone has them, but some of us have bad bikram habits that we struggle with everyday. if you skip the same pose everyday, you might have a bad bikram habit. sorry, couldn’t resist that set-up. sometimes a bad habit isn’t as obvious as fixing your hair after every pose. after tadasana, i often crack my toes by pressing the top of them into the ground and flexing my foot back. it’s quick so most people don’t even notice. it’s a little more obvious the second time i do it during practise—when we do the left leg of pavanmuktasana. the baker actually called me out once at that point “you’re relaxing your foot, not cracking your toes.” ouch. but i needed to do it. i have to do it even outside of class. i’ll stop walking down the street and take off my shoe to crack my toes. i had a traumatic injury to my foot about 10 years ago. i always thought i’d have a limp, but i lost it after practising bikram for about 6 months. that’s not an excuse for cracking my toes in class, but in my mind, it somehow justifys my lack of discipline. is there anything you do in class that you know you shouldn’t?
while i’m asking questions, does anyone know what this is? they start out green, turn yellow, then an incredible red and then fade to black. um, they seem very fragile. that’s about all i know, so if you know more, please share! see you tomorrow ~m

Lychee fruit! I hear they’re good.

I just unconsciously cracked mine over here. Ok, here are MY bad habits! :
- Pushing fringe outta the way after almost every posture. Fixed this by pinning hair outta the way.
- FOUR water breaks, with a total of 1litre in my stomach by the end of class. Then again, it’s only a week or two before THAT TIME of the month that I get dehydrated easily.
- Coming out of dhanurasana early
- Wiping sweat from my eyes [it STINGS :( ] and nose
They sorta look like lychee, but not the kind I’m used to. Strange! Peel back the skin lightly and eat. If you feel dizzy or nauseous, sit down Japanese style and call the doctor.

my bad habits are the ones i say i don’t have. the minute i said, i never look around in class…. i spent the next 2 weeks doing just that!
do your studios do the “happy squat” in half moon? that’s when i roll up on the top of my toes to crack/stretch them. our guest star invited us to. : >
since my instructors know i want to go to TT, they are pointing out things that SR instructors will call me on. like, when we go in to dandayamana-janushirasana i use my handkerchief (which later doubles as a tissue if necessito) to keep my hand from slipping. no problem to use a hanky or washcloth, BUT i can never keep my 10 fingers interlaced, i have to wrap the hanky then relock my fingers which apparently is a big no-no. at first, i was like whatever, but now i see how i lose the rhythm and it just doesn’t look as good.

i’ve never heard of the happy squat, but that sounds like my bad habit, just at a different time. there is *lots* of toe cracking during utkatasana, but i’m 99% sure it is unintentional.
oh you know, i’m not a teacher, nor will i be one any time in the distant future, but your hanky sounds like a prop. it’s hard to keep your fingers interlaced, esp. when covered in sweat, good point. remember, the right way is the hard way!

ooh, it is a prop! nobody in your studio uses hankies or washcloths?

no, you get corrected if you try. people will bring hankies and washcloths to wipe sweat away, but that’s a correction too.

Try interlacing up the webbing, and imagine you’ve got an orange in between your interlaced fingers and you’re gonna give it a CRUSH OF DEATH. Sadistic, but I hope it helps!
Ooh don’t bring your washcloth to the next class, maybe just tissue for the runny nose?
