attitude pt. 13

one more of singapore’s srpint srkis. i’m such a spicoli, i can’t believe this wasn’t one of the first photos i posted. this was one of the funnest nights i’ve had in a long time. if you’re an edmonton reader, make it a point to see them when they bring their circus to your town.

right before class, i looked in the mirror and told myself that i was gonna finish class as strong as i felt then. during the standing series, there were a few light-headed moments, but i told myself to stay strong. when we got to the floor, i felt great and i looked in the mirror again and reminded myself that i was gonna finish class feeling the same way. a little water and then 2 minutes of rest. by the time class ended, i think i finished stronger than when i started. your mindset really helps determine your class. if you go in thinking your prolly gonna fizzle out in the end, you prolly will. no matter how you feel, keep a positive attitude, in and out of the hot room. xo,m

pace

a voyeur’s shot while waiting for the srpint srkis to start. alright, the chair seat kinda got in the way, but i still think this is a cool shot.

i don’t know what it’s like where you are, but it was cold in santa cruz today—i had to wear my heaviest hoodie! seriously, even the hot room felt like a winter session, when the windows make it impossible to get the room super hot. dialogue dominant class today, those are prolly my favorite kind. pure dialogue keeps the pace steady. i kinda don’t like it when teachers make floor savasanas longer to fit in cute stories. like, i kinda just wanna keep going and finish the class. i know they do that to be nice and give people extra rest, but most times, i’m like, let’s go! although, it really wasn’t that long ago when i would have loved the extra rest. eat right, practise regularly and you’ll be loving the fast-paced classes too! xo,m

other things

i love the motion blur of the first photo, especially contrasted with the sharpness of the second. if you want to learn more about singapore’s srpint srkis, please check out their website. i’m stoked, you’ll see my pictures there!

my one day off from bikram. but it’s not like i stayed home, i walked around the propery, this morning and then went out to the cliffs on my bike. in the last month, i’ve been asked a few times what else i do besides bikram. i’m not even buff, so i kinda think they’re goofing on me, but maybe not. i ride my bike everywhere, but that’s it. even younger, i was never much for physical activity, so i’d love to know how the really healthy live. what do you do besides bikram yoga? let me know ~m

distractions

two more from last week’s srpint srkis performance at the 418.

oh, you may not have seen it, but in the comments section, joe mentioned our studio’s latest “inspiring bender.” she’s a small, 14 year old girl who already has a lot of discipline. i haven’t practised near her, but whenever we turn for the seperate leg part of the standing series, it looks like she’s doing well. or if she’s sitting, she’s not being a drama queen like that one guy today. ha ha.

talk about distractions. today’s class had plenty—the girl who pretty much gave up during the opening breathing exercise and the couple who kept talking. our teacher handles it all so well, you should really take a friday noon class with me sometime and find out for yourself! see you tomorrow ~m

worst teacher

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

singapore’s srpint srkis. this was kinda cool, the actors were watching a video of themselves. oh, those crazy college kids. seriously though, it’s cool that they’re doing something different and actually doing it.

you know, i would be the worst teacher ever. today, this bender complained about the heat and my first reaction was “if it’s gonna get too hot for you, don’t come.” she was upset because the room was 108º. seriously, if your body is that sensitive to the heat, maybe you should stay out of the hot room. she wouldn’t let up on my teacher, it got me so mad. “usually when it gets really hot, teachers will open the door.” oh my god, i would have said, don’t come to my class. my teacher is so good though, calm as can be, she says she opens the door when it seems like people are struggling but since most of the room looked strong, she din’t open the door. oh that was good and, seriously, everyone else that commented on the class had nothing but praise. “great class.” “thanks for class!” no one even mentioned the heat. i’ll admit, sometimes the room gets too hot for me, but i think that’s when my mind is wandering. when i have time in my head to think about the heat. if i practise and stay focused on my breathing, i never even think about the heat. the room is only as hot as you think it is, stay focused on breathing and you won’t have time to think about how hot it is. see you tomorrow.

water

more of singapore’s srpint srkis. they’re going to be performing in canada at the fringe theater festival, please look for them!

woke up freezing this morning. i swear it looked like it rained on my deck, but nowhere else on the property. this has been the coldest july i’ve ever experienced. definitely not complaining but the weather has even affected the plums i love. the last two years on the property, they’ve been done by june. this year, the plums are barely ripening right now. i guess that’s a real-life example of global warming, huh?

what do you like to drink after class? i see some people downing coconut water and, when we have it, kombucha right after class. for me, nothing feels more replenishing than plain water, i even like the way it tastes. after i’ve had about a quart of water, i might treat myself to a kombucha or a vita coco(nut water), but immediately following bikram, nothing feels better than water. see you tomorrow ~m

singapore’s srpint srkis. you know, yesterday i confessed that i din’t think this theater troupe was from singapore, but now that i think about it, there weren’t any serpents and it wasn’t much of a circus either. despite the misleading name, singapore’s srpint srkis still gave us an entertaining evening.

after bikram, my buddy and i mobbed our bikes up west cliff. there’s a huge swell coming in, so the surfers were going off. i went out to the “we are california grown” warehouse. you know i’m all about being california born and bred, so know i love this new clothing brand, but for being a warehouse, you think the clothes would have been cheaper. t-shirts and hats were $20, super nice hoodies were $65—ouch! is that what things cost in today’s economy? would you buy a tank top for $20 plus $5 shipping? well, if you think about it, let me know. see you tomorrow ~m
